Between 29th of November and 3rd of December, PKRC hosted an international expert meeting for the development of a new “World Atlas of Desertification and Improvement (WADI). The project is funded by UNEP and coordinated by JRC in Ispra, Italy. The previous two meetings were held in Italy. This third and last meeting was held in Windhoek, Namibia. To give participants opportunity to visit farmers on the ground and experience what land degradation and desertification means to the local farmers, an excursion was made to Ovitoto, a communal area situated close to Okahandja. Here the participants got opportunity to talk to representatives from the local farmers’ association and the traditional authorities. The meeting was successful and resulted in the establishment of a number of thematic working groups that will take the task of developing a new world atlas of desertification further.
